Types of Mattresses

The mattress is the heart of your bed and the part of the purchase you should spend most time and money on.

Pocket Spring Mattresses

Unlike open coil mattresses, which are made from one long piece of wire that is coiled into hundreds of springs, Pocket Spring mattresses contain thousands of individual springs that are completely independent from one another.

When you lay on the mattress each spring responds individually to the contours of your body.

Pocket Springs are usually glued together above and below the springs. At Pocket Spring Bed Company, each spring is carefully packed into a pocket. And the pockets are tied together through the centre. This allows the springs move completely independently to those around it giving every square inch of your body unique support.

The springs are closely packed in next to each other so there is no chance of sideways movement, which would result in dips in the mattress.

Pocket Springs are also ideal if you & your partner are different sizes as the springs protect against “roll together”. As pocket springs provide exceptional support, they are also effective if you or your partner are a little on the heavy side.

Mini Springs are settled on top of the pocket springs in higher spring count mattresses like those in the Artisan range.

As a general rule, the more pocket springs that there are in a mattress, the more localised the support. Comfort however is very subjective and we strongly recommend that you visit one of our stockists to try the beds for yourself.

Individual Mini-Springs

Each mini spring is around a third of the size of a standard pocket spring unit and is integrated into the mattress for enhanced comfort and support. Each spring moves independently and reacts and responds to your body’s slightest movement. The mini springs are exceptionally sensitive and the support is unrivalled.

Every time you lie on your bed you’ll experience thousands upon thousands of springs, all working tirelessly to make you feel simply sensational from head to toe.

Natural Fillings

At Pocket Spring Bed Company, we take the finest lambswool and the purest cotton to create a supremely comfortable sleeping surface that keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. We combine these natural luxuries with our unique, painstakingly hand crafted pocket spring system.

Teased horsehair provides an opulent layer of support. Once horsehair is gently teased and tightly packed into the mattress, it has a natural, long lasting resilience.

Cashmere adds a touch of pure luxury with its unbeatable plushness.

Memory Foam

As you lie on memory foam, it responds to your body temperature and moulds itself to your contours, creating an individually tailored surface that gives the optimum level of support and comfort. When you get up, it returns to its original shape, hence the name. An added bonus is that you’ll never have to turn the mattress.

 Latex Foam

Natural latex, the “milk” of the Hevea Brasiliensis tree, is processed to create a plush comfort layer. The latex complements the responsive action of the springs, supporting your body and moulding to your contours.

Latex is naturally hypoallergenic and our latex is also aerated for effective ventilation. Our latex mattresses are extremely resilient so do not need to be turned.

Wool Pom-Pom Style Tufts

Tufts are essential for holding the mattress together. They run from one side of the mattress to the other and ensure the springs have just the right level of tension. The two ends are visible at either side of the mattress.

It’s important that the exposed tufts are soft so they don’t interfere with the sleeping surface. Whilst our wool pom-pom tufts are strong on the inside, they are exceptionally soft to touch.

 Concealed Tufts

The cotton sleeping surface is folded over the tufts to completely cover them. The result is a completely smooth surface for an idyllic night’s sleep.

Side Details

The sides of the mattress are painstakingly sewn to the spring unit all the way around the mattress. Depending on the height of the mattresses and the number of springs inside, the mattress will have two or three rows of side stitching. As a rule of thumb, the more rows the better.

Side handles are helpful for carrying and rotating the mattress.

Air vents are placed intermittently around the mattress to allow air to circulate to keep you cool.

 Zip & Link

If you and your partner prefer a different level of firmness, we’ll create each of you your ideal bed and simply zip the two halves together. It’ll be done securely and seamlessly so you can still use the full bed surface comfortably.

Tensions

Once you have chosen your ideal mattress, Pocket Spring Bed Company will adjust the tension to suit your preferences: be it regular or firm.
